The old saying “You only get what you pay for” really hit home with the chap who brought this tank (below) in for a repair. Admittedly it was cheap, $65 for a “New Tank”? Originally we were going to silicon a piece of 150 mm wide glass over the crack in the bottom, but when we discovered the bottom was only 4 mm we decided to put a new 6 mm bottom over the original shower screen bottom, when we cleaned the excess silicon off we found another problem, one end panel only overlapped the side panel by 3 mm on the bottom and 3 mm on the top of the other side which meant the glass was not cut square, so now we will have to put a new end in the tank. So now the cheap tank $65 plus $35 for a new bottom and $30 to replace the end means the tank is worth $130, we sell the same tank NEW for $95, and ours are made by a reputable tank manufacturer in Brisbane.
Luckily the chap arrived home to find the cracked tank with 30 or 40 mm of water still in it so his fish were OK, had he come home a little later it would have been a different story, also fortunately the tank was in the garage, had it been in his lounge room, 120 liters of water would have done considerable damage to the floor coverings.
A word of advice, when you purchase a tank, make sure it is made with the correct thickness glass and purchase from a reputable shop or manufacturer who will give a warranty with their tanks. If a tank is not made from the correct thickness glass and there is a problem, your household insurance will not cover for any damage caused.
